Rep. Bill Foster’s Refusal to Debate Shows Inability to Defend Record, Drawing Parallels to Trump’s Tactics

NAPERVILLE, IL— Qasim Rashid, a Democrat and human rights lawyer running for US Congress in Illinois’ 11th District, reminds voters that incumbent Democrat Bill Foster’s refusal to engage in debates before the March 19 primary election reflects his inability to defend his record.

Despite initially agreeing to three debates, Rep. Bill Foster went back on his word, canceling three crucial events: a candidate forum hosted by the Lisle Township Democratic Organization (LTDO) on December 11, a forum hosted by the Sun City Civics Committee (SCCC) on February 12, and a debate hosted by the Naperville League of Women Voters on January 31.

“Let’s be clear—my opponent Bill Foster wants IL-11 to vote for a record that even he isn’t able to defend,” said Rashid. “Voters deserve courageous candidates who engage openly and answer tough questions. Rep. Foster’s evasion of debates deprives constituents of critical information and raises questions about his commitment to voters and the democratic process.”

Foster’s cancellation of all three proposed debates reflects his apparent disregard for transparency and accountability, echoing the tactics employed by insurrectionist and far-right extremist former President Donald Trump.

“Democrats attend debates,” said Sydney Nelson, Qasim for Congress’ Communications Director. “Bill Foster’s refusal to face the public mirrors Trump’s tactics to sidestep accountability for his record. With democracy under attack, we need elected leaders who fight for justice, not hide from accountability. IL-11 deserves better, especially with early voting around the corner on Thursday, February 8.”

Upholding his commitment to the district, Rashid attended the LTDO forum, and will proudly and individually participate in an alternative SCCC forum, which is open to the public and will take place on February 11 at 2 pm at the Huntley Public Library. Qasim for Congress urgently calls on Rep. Foster to reconsider his refusal, participate in debates, and demonstrate a genuine commitment to democratic principles. The people of the 11th District deserve a fair and informed electoral process.
