Qasim Rashid Calls for Transparency as Rep Bill Foster Refuses to Accept Debate Offers

NAPERVILLE, IL— Qasim Rashid, a Democrat and human rights lawyer running for Congress in Illinois’ 11th District, expresses disappointment in incumbent Democrat Bill Foster’s refusal to commit to debates and candidate forums before the primary election on March 19, 2024.

“Voters deserve to hear from their candidates, to understand our positions on the critical issues facing our community, such as climate and economic justice, healthcare, and human rights,” Rashid said. “Debates are a critical part of that process, and I am excited to make my case before constituents to earn their vote.”

Rep. Foster has already declined two invitations to engage with voters in congressional candidate forums. The first was organized by the Township Democratic Organization (LTDO) on December 11, and the second by the Sun City Civics Committee in Huntley, IL, on February 12. Rep. Foster rejected both invitations, resulting in their cancellation and depriving voters of the opportunity to directly learn about their Democratic candidates for Congress.

On December 11, Alex Salisbury, Foster’s Campaign Manager, confirmed the campaign’s intent to participate in future debates. In response, Qasim for Congress sent a letter on December 19, suggesting three in-person debates and a virtual debate on January 31 with the Naperville League of Women Voters. Despite repeated attempts to confirm these debate dates, the Foster campaign has yet to respond.

“With early voting in less than 50 days, Bill Foster’s refusal to address his record is a disservice to voters,” said Sydney Nelson, Communications Director for Qasim for Congress.

“Despite Foster’s scientific background, his actions, such as accepting money from fossil fuel companies, and endorsing fracking and discredited carbon capture science, sharply contrast Qasim Rashid’s dedication to human rights, science, and working people. We are eager to highlight these differences in values.”

Debates and forums are essential for constituents to make informed decisions about their vote. We strongly encourage Rep. Foster to join us in upholding the democratic process, providing voters with the opportunity to hear from both candidates vying for their support.
