Writers, Scholars, & Activists You Should Follow
Four thoughtful voices to expand your horizon and understanding on the key issues impacting us on a daily basis
I’m often asked about who I read, learn from, and can recommend to others? Here, I am happy to recommend you subscribe to and follow each of these four thoughtful voices. If you have the capacity to become a paid subscriber to each of them, please do. But at a minimum, I hope you sign up as a free subscriber. Each of these individuals have led by example for years. Their insights cover the core issues of justice that matter to each of us—economic justice, racial justice, gender justice, and climate justice. And given the relentless assaults from the current regime on each of these rights, the advocacy these leaders offer is more critical now than ever before.
Let’s Address This.

Dara Starr Tucker
Dara is the quintessential renaissance woman. She is a scholar, a singer, a songwriter, a musician, a radio host, and an activist.
Her brilliant series, “The Breakdown with Dara Starr Tucker,” examines issues at the intersection of race, culture, and politics and frames those issues in their proper historical context. This allows readers to not only understand the news, but to better understand the culture in which those news events happen, and their place in it. She’s also one of the most prominent Black voices you’ll find on social media, with more than 1 million followers on TikTok, and hundreds of thousands more across numerous platforms. Dara’s voice is sorely needed in 2025 America, and I encourage you to support her work and her advocacy.
Sylvia Salazar
Sylvia is a tech expert turned activist and excels in both fields. As a mom and Colombian American, she brings a critically under-represented voice to American politics and social justice.
Through her series “Latino Lens,” Sylvia brilliantly helps her readers and followers understand the issues impacting our nation through a Latino perspective. She then helps her readers discover how to mobilize our community, and effectuate meaningful change. As we saw a significant shift towards the right from the Latino community in the 2024 election, Sylvia’s voice is more important than ever before to debunk disinformation and ensure Latino voices are not just heard, but understood and taken seriously. I encourage you to follow Sylvia and get a Latina’s take on what’s happening now—which she describes as “insightful, impactful, and a little spicy.”
Lindsay Meyer-Harley
Lindsay Meyer-Harley founded Still We Rise, as a community for good. It has since grown to more than 400,000 followers of people dedicated to human rights and social justice.
With Still We Rise, Lindsay dives into the happenings of politics, locally, nationally, and worldwide. She is a champion for protecting reproductive rights, women’s rights, healthcare justice, climate justice, and for a plethora of non-profit organizations serving the most marginalized in our nation and world. Still We Rise excels at educating on action steps and ways we can collectively rise up for all people in their times of need. Lindsay does this every single day with compassion, education, hope—and as she’ll proudly admit herself—a little snark.
Salaam Bhatti
Salaam Bhatti is a poverty lawyer, an author, a stand up comedian, and someone who has dedicated his life to ensuring no person in this country ever goes hungry.
Through his series, “A Paycheck Away with Salaam Bhatti,” Salaam takes readers on a journey towards ending poverty by learning about the root cause issues, exploring solutions, and sharing ways each of us can act. His scholarship is rarely made available in mainstream media, and the bite-size samples we see on social media are too often misinformation. As wealth and income inequality hits record highs, and as the current regime plans to cut hundreds of billions from social welfare programs—including food access—it is more critical than ever that we know our rights and how to protect them. After living in poverty himself for nearly a decade and working as a public benefits attorney, Salaam is committed to growing a community that seeks to build a nation where we are no longer a paycheck away from eviction, hunger, and death.
Conclusion
In a time of unprecedented assaults on justice, equity, and truth, the voices of Dara , Sylvia , Lindsay, and Salaam are not just valuable—they’re vital. Each of these brilliant advocates bring unique and key insights to the most urgent battles of our time: racial justice, immigrant rights, gender equity, economic justice, and climate action.
But they cannot do this work alone. By subscribing, sharing, and supporting their work—whether as a free or paid subscriber—you become part of a movement that rejects apathy and embraces action. So, I urge you: Don’t just be a bystander—invest in a future committed to justice. We are in a moment where history is being written—not by the powerful, but by those who refuse to remain silent. Stand with these leaders. Stand with me. And together, let’s ensure justice not only has a voice but a chorus loud enough to change the world.
There's a harmony of sorts about the kinds of minds and thinking that align on this platform! I've been following Dara Star Tucker on IG for over a year now and SO appreciate her thoughtful and authentic take on the world! I often quote and reference her work! Salim Bhatti's page is a delightful surprise! One of his employers is a former client of mine; I did not work with him closely, but in our interactions, experienced him as optimistic (an undervalued quality IMO!), reflective and exuding a kind intelligence! I'm excited to see this version of him on Substack! And I won't leave this comment section without remarking on the AMAZING work you are doing Qasim -- you NEVER miss, you bring the receipts, you arm us with data and logic, you fight the fight in the 21st century way: data infused with compassion! Your advocacy is brilliant and empathetic! I wish you'd won your political seat in Illinois; I watched your campaign from the East Coast with great interest and anticipation -- the state, this country, needs the diversity of intelligent thought you bring to your work! Reading your posts on any platform and others like Dara really make me feel like I am not alone in this world as we watch this country (further) devolve into greed, fear and ignorance . . .
I don’t manipulate Substack to get more followers. I just want to speak my mind. I will check out these authors recommended by Qasim.
Today I urge everyone to be aware of the economic blackout that is coming up February 28th during which no one buys anything. Then between March 7-14th no one should buy things through Amazon.
This is just a start. I ask anyone who reads this Substack to re-stack this on as many Substack groups as possible. The counter-attack against Trump begins on February 28th!
