Okay, here's a fact

Yes, under federal law, illegally entering the United States is considered a crime, specifically defined under 8 U.S.C. § 1325, and can be classified as a misdemeanor on the first offense, with harsher penalties for subsequent illegal entries or re-entries after deportation; this means that crossing the border at a non-designated location without inspection is considered a criminal act.

Key points about illegal entry as a crime:

Civil vs. Criminal:

While immigration violations are generally considered civil offenses, the act of illegally entering the country itself is criminalized under federal law.

Section 1325:

This section of the U.S. Code outlines the criminal penalties for improper entry into the United States, including entering at a non-designated location or attempting to evade inspection by immigration officers.

Re-entry as a more serious offense:

If someone is deported and then re-enters the country illegally, it is considered a more serious crime, often classified as a felony,

Being convicted of illegal entry can impact future attempts to apply for a green card or other immigration benefits.

I was pleasantly surprised to learn that no 287g agreements are in effect in my current home state not in the county in the state where I used to live. Thanks for posting this information.

In one of his last acts as president, Joe Biden freed Leonard Peltier -- the longest serving Native political prisoner in U.S. history. Thank you for your activism and this came via email

This presidential act of clemency is thanks to our collective advocacy and generations of activists demanding his release, including Pope Francis, Saint Mother Teresa, Nelson Mandela, the Dalai Lama, and Coretta Scott King.

Can you find out if he is home with his family for me, I’d appreciate it, if not that’s okay.

He is apparently under house arrest and in ailing health. I'm glad Biden finally pardoned him but it should have been done so long ago.

One more after this,if I can locate it. I was notified of his last parole hearing and was asked to send a letter, which I did in all due respect of everyone involved. After hearing it was denied I read this article and one reason why he wasn’t paroled then, realizing why and when he was freed.

The incredible enrichment one receives from engaging with people from different cultures is something that everyone should experience. I never knew what I was missing until my husband and I started volunteering to “help“ refugees settling in our community. Although I’m sure it is important that we were there to guide them through the very confusing requirements of paperwork and odd customs, I’ve learned so much more from them! Meeting generous, kind, people with a sincere desire to live in this country has been one of the great honors of my life.

The above provides information with links to the information in many languages

Because I work daily in a setting with many immigrants, I keep copies of the above ready, at hand, and I am always assertive about meeting agents from ICE and INS

I will check with our town counsel to see if our jurisdiction is one in the 287g program

Qasim, thank you for all of this information. My granddaughter's elementary school has a huge Latino population, and I am terrified about what could happen to those kids and families. You have given me some good ideas about where to begin to proactively work for them.

I keep reading that he wants to end birthright citizenship. Would this be for babies born going forward, or would it strip current citizens of their citizenship?

He's made that effort and I know his co-fascist Stephen Miller is pushing that aggressively. Wouldn't surprise me to see them introduce such a bill.

I am so grateful that you write with such clarity and honesty for those in need to find - please anyone reading - share this with all who you know need to have this information at hand - or copy and paste the pieces out of it most important and print it out - hand it to those who may be in need to have in their pockets... that we continue to have any form of government that actually deals in language and action around divisiveness is beyond comprehension at this stage of humanity .....
