I am Amy Carter and I subscribe to your Substack. This article is the first media I have read since Dad died. After a flurry of activity and a crowd of people, I’m in my parent’s house alone for what feels like the first time and the notification from Substack appeared on my phone. There is no better way to remember him and I appreciate that you and your readers are keeping this important part of his legacy alive. Thank you.
I didn't see your post until I had written mine. My love to you and family. I support The Carter Center, particularly your mother's work with mental health, and I admired their partnership for their long marriage. My Daddy was a carpenter, volunteered for Habitat, and was a real Christian who LIVED his Christianity in the life he lived -- also set a hard standard to follow. Love them both.
I’m sorry for your loss. I hope you have many wonderful dreams visits with them. I know it’s heartbreaking to lose your parents, even as an adult.
I met your mom briefly at the Carter Center’s Women & the Constitution Convention in Feb. 1988. I was Pres. Of the Women’s Law Students Association & thankfully was sent by Univ. Miami School of Law. It was an incredible experience. I actually sat next to Rosa Parks at a plenary session & got the nerve up to ask her to sign my program, which I’ve kept framed all this time.
Your parents were both great believers in women’s rights & of the Equal Rights Amendment & we are soooo close to getting it published now, but we only have 13 days left to get Biden to do his Constitutional Art. II, Sec. 3 “Take Care” duty to direct the Archivist to publish the ERA, that was fully-ratified on 1/27/2020, in order to carry out her mandatory ministerial duty per 1 US Code Sec. 106b.
She said: “I am glad there is a new campaign to pass the ERA called ‘Equal Means Equal.’ I hope it succeeds this time around.”
EME is imho, the most effective national ERA advocacy org. They were instrumental in getting the last 3 states to ratify the ERA (NV, IL & VA, the last on 1/27/2020). The founder & Pres. of EME, Kamala Lopez, of LA, has been at the ERA House in DC almost a mth now, working to get Biden to publish. She found an old flyer from the National Education Association, about the ERA, with a picture of your father, with his words: “I do not believe my daughter should have fewer rights than my sons.” That made me cry. I was in high school when he was President. I continue to be in awe of your parents’ continued lives of service.
Biden has actually been gaslighting the women & lgbt pple telling them he has our backs, when actually, he’s blocked the ERA from being published for his whole term. We have proof of this. I will put links for you to see what’s been going on. He can fix this & make > 51% of our population EQUAL CITIZENS for the first time in our 248 year history, WITH JUST 1 PHONE CALL, text, email, or an Executive Order, which I’ve sent to his WH Counsel along with lots of backup material, and the VP’s counsel, and many of their top advisors. Most recently on 12/16/24 & to WHCOS, Jen O’Malley Dillon, VP’s Counsel.
I totally realize that you are in the midst of grief, but I think you have the power to bring legal equal rights to women and fulfill one of your parents’ greatest hopes, by calling Pres. Biden, talking about their thoughts and beliefs and imploring Biden privately to do this for your parents, [or if he doesn’t do it beforehand, publicly ask him to do the right thing immediately on the 9th], & if he hedges (or claims Congress has to remove the [unconstitutional & void] deadline — which is part of his great deflection), ask him if he has a religious objection, which I suspect is the problem, then please ask him to resign, so Kamala Harris can be our first female president (& your father voted for her!), if only for a week, so she can direct the Archivist by 1/13/25, because T is going to enforce the 1873 Comstock Act, a national criminal abortion ban, & SCOTUS just accepted a case that could allow them to outlaw contraception, & there’s a case working it’s way up to allow them to invalidate all gay marriages (I say 1/13 bc even the 15th is pushing it, because there’s a process the Archivist must follow, before the new Constitution can come out & he’s going to see the Pope at sometime in there apparently).
Here is a short explanation of the legal, social & political reasons Biden must publish the ERA to save lives and livelihoods! (I sent this to WHC et al. on 12/16/24. My contact info is on there. If you have any questions, please text me to tell me a time, so I know to answer.
Thank you sooo much for reading and considering this. I am happy to answer any questions. I’m going to post my signed Women & the Constitution program as a comment on Qasim Rashid’s bluesky post. My Blue Sky is ArlaineRockey.bsky.social.
Your dad wrote, "Why not the best?". He indeed gave us his best. Sadly, people choose to believe that faith, charity, love, honesty, and compassion don't matter. His memory will always be a blessing. Thank you for sharing your parents with us.
your father was a national treasure, the best president of my lifetime, and I’m 66! we will never forget him, or his kindness, honesty, and love for his fellow humans.
Amy, my deepest condolences on your loss. Your father holds a special place in my heart because I came of voting age while he was running for his second term, and I am proud to have voted for him. The disappointment in the result of that election was immense. Your father leaves behind a humanitarian legacy that will never ever be forgotten by those of us who believe deeply in his intelligence, decency, and commitment to social justice causes. Your parents stand out as jewels in the crown of American history, especially during these troubled and fearful times we are all facing.
Thank you for coming in Amy and acknowledging this, and the biggest hugs to you and your family for the loss of your most amazing father. It was he that inspired me to volunteer for Habitat for Humanity. An incredible man and a huge loss for all of us.
All of our condolences, of course. The vast, vast majority of us lost your father a long time ago. His local community didn't, because he was devoted to them, and continued to teach Sunday school. And found (I think he did) Habitat for Humanity, which has benefited very many people. And always be available for ambassador-like functions. And now all of us, and you, have lost him with finality. There simply isn't enough good that can be said about him. I have never made a careful study of American history beyond what we all learn in school. I feel sure George Washington, John Adams, Abraham Lincoln, and maybe some others were excellent presidents and exceptional people. But no one, to my knowledge, was like your father. Not that anyone asked for your permission, but thank you for sharing him with us. I have every confidence that he and your mother instilled in you the magnificent values they had. Again, I'm sorry for your loss. I hope your life is very good, and that the rest of it will be, too.
The first time I ever voted it was in 1976. I was 19 and I voted for your father. I still think he stood head and shoulders above every other president in my lifetime.
In a time when the words “Christian values” are often wielded as weapons by those who seem unfamiliar with their essence, your life remains a testament to what they truly mean: love, humility, service, and unyielding moral courage.
As the 39th President of the United States, you brought a quiet dignity to the Oval Office, pursuing peace where others stoked conflict. Your leadership in brokering the Camp David Accords showed the world that diplomacy, grounded in faith and principle, could triumph over cynicism and division. And while history has recognized your presidency more kindly with each passing year, it is your post-presidency that stands as the gold standard of what an ex-president can and should be.
From eradicating diseases to building homes for those in need, your work with the Carter Center and Habitat for Humanity has been an unparalleled legacy of compassion. You didn’t retreat to a gilded life of grift and spectacle but chose instead to labor humbly, embodying your spiritual call to serve “the least of these.”
In an era defined by loud self-aggrandizement and moral bankruptcy—where some falsely claim your faith while trampling its core tenets—you are proof that decency is not weakness and that true greatness lies in the quiet, steadfast work of lifting others up.
Thank you, President Carter, for showing us what goodness looks like.
When your dad was elected president I was 4 years old. My family had the utmost respect for your father for being an advocate of civil rights.
During his presidency, I’ll never forget visiting the White House around 6 years of age, and wishing I could’ve met him and you (watching you on the news helped me wear glasses as a kid). When we were in DC at that time, there was so much memorabilia of his fondness for peanuts, and that bothered me as I have anaphylactic allergies to peanuts and tree nuts. 😂 That was the only thing I disliked about your dad. 🤣
Your dad was truly a Godfearing Christian who tried to spread love throughout this world. I’m glad I was able to grow up learning about him.
I’m sending my deepest condolences, prayers, and virtual hugs.
I am close to your age and have Loved your father since he was President. I remember telling my parents to vote for him because he was a great man and would do great things in his life. I was right he was a wonderful soul that did so much good for this world. I am so sad because the world feels a lot darker without your Dad, he was such a bright light. I was crying feeling how sad and lonely you must feel in your parents home without your dad 💔 I know how much you loved your parents and how close you were. You are in my prayers 🙏🏻 I know they are together again watching over you in spirit 🕊️
Sincere Condolences on the loss of both First Lady Roselyn and President Jimmy Carter. They were such a refreshingly different Presidential team although cursed with a cascade of events they could not control. I was disappointed when that phony broken down "B" list actor defeated Pres Carter and have wondered ever since if we could have avoided the meltdown of Democracy Reagan unleashed. Even in those days of greater civility the Carters' faith and "old fashioned virtues" were mocked and scorned and we were treated to the swamp of mischief and malice directed at them by political operatives. Early versions of the grisly malefactors currently blighting our lives.
Memorials for them both are an excellent way to remind us of possibly the last honest President. (With Obama a close runner-up!
I was 12 when you father lost his reelection. I did not know much about politics at the time, but I remember being so sad because I knew he was a good man. I remember you too, because we were about the same age, and I thought how sad you must have been too. He was a great man. May he rest in peace. My sincere condolences to you and your entire family.
Thank you, Mr. Rashid, for your wonderful tribute.
I was in the army when your dad was president. To me he was the best president to date. We had no wars during that period. We didn’t deploy to all over the world. I was happy to serve then. When cowboy Reagan came in, soldiers died on stupid orders, the botched rescue attempt, then the Iran-contra weapons sales that were used on our military troops. Every year after that, thousands of military personnel and civilians have died, useless wars and presidents have failed the American people. There were times I wished that he would run again. The world loved your father and he did more for the world than any other president. Habitat for humanity was one of his legacy points. Ambassador to the world is another. I loved your father and his policies. It saddens me that he has died. He was an example of what a great leader is and what a great president should be. Peace unto you and your family always.
Amy - As a Palestinian Christian American, I cannot express my deepest gratitude over the remarkable contributions your father made to show the world why the Holy Land matters and why humanity should matter. For those who did not know of his courage in confronting AIPAC, the short interview with Democracy Now, will demonstrate his deep understanding of ALL involved in this clash b/w Israel and The Palestinians. His book on Apartheid is forthright in pointing up how far Israel has overstepped its boundaries and squashed The Palestinian people. Worth reading also, is Jonathan Alter's "His Very Best: Jimmy Carter, A Life." It shows a man, a human, yet one who didn't waver from his goal of trying to live like Jesus. I do not regret voting for Jimmy Carter. The first time was voting against Ford. The second time was when he lost to Reagan. Thanks for posting the interview. “The Israeli government’s settlement expansion, land annexation, and apartheid enforcement” has been the root cause of the issues. The Israeli government was never interested in a two plate solution. They wanted the whole table, regardless of whose rights got trampled. Dachau, Treblinka, Auschwitz…so incredibly horrific and wrong. And then they turn around and do the same thing to others. It’s madness. President Carter was courageous and had integrity in vocalizing this truth.
We just finished watching the 20/20 special edition about Jimmy & Rosalyn Carter on Hulu. What a remarkable human being he was, and what an extraordinary marriage & partnership he had with his wife. Well if u want to talk about his legacy u don’t need to look farther than what he did in Iran 😞. As Iranian American I was in USA going to university. No one knew who khomeini was. How did he suddenly appeared in Paris. Some illiterate fanatic person from India who could hardly speak Farsi. The start of the Islamic jehad can be blame on Mr Carter and his favorite advisor the young Biden the very seasoned politician. My condolences to Carter family but he was no hero in my book
Zora, like many of the families of supporters of the Shah, lives in a state of willful ignorance. As an Iranian, she should have known who Khomeini was. Secondly, anti American feeling in Iran had little or nothing to do with the JIHAD; as far as I am aware, the jihad has largely been, if not completely, a Sunni Muslim phenomenon. Lastly, you can be very seasoned or you can be young; Biden was in the middle of his second term, hardly a very seasoned adviser!
Dear Amy Carter ♥️ my sincere condolences on the loss of your father who was a great example of how to live a Christian life 🙏 😢 We should keep his life and legacy alive in word and deed! My he rest in peace
An amazing man, family, legacy. I remember how disappointed I was when he didn’t get a second term. His post presidency is an example for the world. He will be remembered as a great humanitarian.

How very unpleasant you are.
At least learn history before you run your big mouth. And show some respect.
We will never again see his equal in the leadership of this nation.
Unless we rebel
As a force of nature
In brotherhood, with his example
To seize our birthright, of a just society
From the monied combines who own the media
And herd the sheep, who fear the lies
And protect the paranoid insecurities of the wealthy
Justice, truth, fairness and decency are all the same thing.
Thank you, Mr. Rashid, for your fine tribute to an outstanding man of courage and truth!
Thank you for reading and sharing!
An amazing man, family, legacy. I remember how disappointed I was when he didn’t get a second term. His post presidency is an example for the world. He will be remembered as a great humanitarian.
