Qasim, perhaps you are a good person to ask this, since you have free subscription. There are a number of journalists on Substack that I'd love to support, but I don't feel like I can support them at the preset levels. What I really wish I could do is give five dollars a month to several of my favorite journalists, but don't see that as an option. Is there a way to support on a custom level?
Yeah I keep my content free for that reason as well. I welcome people's paid support, as it helps fund the work I do, and I likewise never want to be a financial burden upon anyone. Thank you for your trust and support my friend.
Thanks for this and the Ground News rec. I had not heard of that platform and will now add it to the rotation. I've dropped every legacy media news outlet. My go-to's now are The Intercept, ProPublica, The Lever, Sarah Kendzior, The Grist, Drop Site News, Rest of the World, Zeteo, The Electronic Intifada, Al Jazeera and you, of course.
Thank you, Qasim, for this perspective and the source recommendation.
In the environment of 'canned information', restricted communications, and opinion and dissent repression which Trump and Trump-supporters will favor and make attempts to impose on Americans, it is the responsibility of each of us to be candid, factual, and focused in making statements and asking questions. A key and necessary commitment each of us needs to make is to good-faith expression.
i also use Media Bias Fact Check, to see where an outlet falls between right or left, and factual or conspiracy theory/psuedo-science. I've also used Snopes *forever* in debunking or proving crazy claims (although recently i've been annoyed at their *literal* interpretation of things, and not the implied intent behind words used.)
"Legacy media is failing?" Legacy media has failed. Even on NPR yesterday or the day before, I heard a reference to Substack. Legacy media/MSM has failed, and you and many people like you are the replacement. The king is dead: long live the king.
Hhm, I subscribe to "The Intercept" and "The Lever," too. And "The Guardian," and "Common Dreams." Yesterday, I subscribed to Zeteo. I get Brian Cohen's stuff for free, but he, too, has a Substack account for which I don't pay, because I'll go broke paying for all these accounts. "Wolves and Sheep" and some other Substack accounts, too. I'm not even familiar with the others you listed. I totally agree with you that it would be great to get this for a lower price. I wish Substack would offer subscriptions to X number of accounts for the low, low price of... Although I think David Sirota and Arjun Singh, and all of their authors, do a great job with "The Lever," I soon enough came to the conclusion that they just tell one (totally valid) story a million ways, or with a million examples: how private money corrupts government, which I already know. So I'm going to step down the level of my support when my subscription ends. I'll free up some money for other sources.
Your account is free for readers? I think I pay for it, although at a discounted rate. Did I confuse your account with someone else's? Mine is free, and I don't pay for Trygve Hammer's, and maybe an additional one or two. But you have to pay to comment on a number of them, and I'll go broke paying for all of them.
I watch the GrayZone and read Max Blumenthal and Aaron Maté. Sabrina Salvati’s podcast Sabby Sabs is full of good and days based information. The Katie Halper Show is also a good one as is Kim Iverson’s show. Electric Intifada too
It would be nice if you also included a list of other great not for profit journos in every pub: The intercept, The Lever, Jessica Valenti (Abortion Everyday), Erin Reed, Heated.... Also would be nice if all these people could get together so I could have 1 subscription!
will have to wait until 2025 to subscribe, all tapped out :(
Grateful for your support, Anne. Only subscribe if affordable. Don't ever burden yourself. I'm grateful that you read and share. That's huge.

Ah, I see you have a six dollar support level, that's doable for me. I wish others had this.
Yeah I keep my content free for that reason as well. I welcome people's paid support, as it helps fund the work I do, and I likewise never want to be a financial burden upon anyone. Thank you for your trust and support my friend.
So do you know anything about customized support?
I've been using Ground News for a few weeks and have found the factuality rating on each article to be extremely helpful.
Thank you for sharing! I agree they help contextualize extremely well.

Very cool. Ground News will help contextualize legacy media too, but each of the outlets you listed are solid.
I also recommend the ICIJ---International Consortium of Investigative Journalists.
Thank you!
Ground News is the best, I love it!
Awesome

Thank you for investing. It’s one reason I keep my platform free. I never want to be a burden on readers.
