I think we need to accept that many in the Democratic Party are also happy with censorship. It’s bi-partisan.

Yep, my Rep was one of the Democrats who voted for it. What a surprise; he voted for every single shipment of arms to Israel in the last year. That's what this bill is about: criminalizing being pro-Palestine. They just don't see what kind of damage to First Amendment rights it's going to have.

That's a lot of Representatives who didn't vote on this important matter. I hope for their sakes that nothing stopped them from cashing the checks from us.

I think you're suffering from hysteria. You will need people and votes in the right to kill this kind of legislation and you're basically accusing everyone who voted for Trump as being a jackboot. Tone it down and add real data and examples. For instance, you say Trump is a dictator and that he will go after specific groups. If that's the case, go back to his first terms and finds concrete examples to present. And remember that campaigning is one thing and governing is another..

The road to fascism is paved by people telling us we're over reacting. Trump passed a literal Muslim Ban. He pushed through an abortion ban. He repealed affirmative action. He targets immigrants. He targets LGBTQ folks. Your absurd privilege to sanitize and white wash white supremacy is shameless and you should self reflect why you're so okay with it.

It’s impossible not to see the consequences of the permissions granted by rhetoric from the right. There is more than campaigning and governing. During this “interregnum” on the ground, Nazis have marched through Columbus Ohio. Blacks, women, LGBTQIA’s and other vulnerable groups have had racist, misogynistic, and bigoted texts sent directly to their private phones. No one is being hysterical. At minimum we remain vigilant against consequences like stochastic (probable, not predictable). At best we all rise up and challenge. Thanks again, Qasim, for your valiant pushback. Harry

Fuckers🤬 This isn't the first time they've stabbed us in the back either. Clinton signed NAFTA and gutted the social safety nets a la Reagan. 31 Democrats aided and abetted seating Thomas and Alito. Obama bombed Libya and bailed out the corrupt Wall Street bankers and even hired some of them. The DNC went to great lengths to sabotage Sanders in 2016 and 2020. They also ran smear campaigns against Jill Stein. They're just as scummy as the Republicans.

And yet the Democrats insist that they are fundamentally different from Republicans

Qasim, this bill passed the House yesterday, but by a slimmer margin than the earlier try. The challenge now is the Senate, so everyone please contact your Senators and explain that this bill would allow the trump administration to strip any non profit of it's status and therefore ability to function. The non-profits are currently organizing to resist the trump administration. Trumps people know this.

People must not underestimate the intent of the trump gang to do damage

I just did and I received a cold letter back from my Republican representative. How it was necessary . I done know what my two Democrat Senators are doing ?Warner and Kaine . They gave me the same BS when I write to them . We need a list of all the Reps and Senators who are not on AIPAC’s take .

The challenge now will be the Senate. Suggest that you write and explain the while the overt language of this bill is related to terrorism, the unspoken threat is to nonprofits which provide seriously needed advocacy on health, welfare, legal and educational issues. These organizations will be at risk for being closed down. Also, these are the organizations which are organizing to resist dangerous trump administration actions.

You don’t have to read between the lines to know that’s exactly what MAGA wants.

The legislators may be taking the legislation at face value.

Thank you for this important alert. I was able to look up how my previous and current Representatives voted and it was a strange awakening. Both are considered to be reasonable liberal democrats, but they both voted in favor of this frightening bill. I have written to both of them, inquiring as to how they possibly could have voted "yea" to this bill and have called them to task, as well as providing them with information on the Coalition Letter opposing HR 9495 for their information. I am awaiting their responses. Your providing o links to our representatives and how they voted, the link to the Hon. Hakeem Jeffries, Speaker, House of Representatives "Coalition Letter..." as well as your calls to action, have been extremely helpful in providing concrete actions for us to take. Thank you for this and thank you for all the previous explanations and alerts concerning how the israelis are perpetrating genocide and war crimes against the Palestinian people.

Maria, I think that busy legislators are looking at the content of the bill which addresses actual terrorist organizations and not considering how this could be twisted to kill ANY non-profit without due process.

Thank you for that, Gail. I appreciate your reasoning. That of course is possible, but it is the job of our representatives, or their assistants, to understand the bills for which they vote and to understand the full implications of those bills so that critical mistakes of votes made in error not be done.

Also: reach out to other Democratic reps who voted "Yea". There's a method to this bent madness. How many of the 50 lost their seats in this recent election?

Interesting that my representative kept her seat. I put the question directly to her: what do you know that we don't know, and that she needs to communicate these current and upcoming votes to her constituents.

Thank you for this article, sharing this now, been contacting my reps and will keep on contacting them. We can't give any government our permission to just label and decide who is an enemy of the people, we must stand up for our rights, and for everyone's right to speak out. We are allowed to disagree with leaders and should stand up for this to stand up for everyone's right to free speech. This bill cannot pass!

I agree; this is a very undemocratic and harsh bill. If it passes, Trump (the Fapweasel) could use it to take revenge on organizations he doesn’t like, but President Biden could just veto the bill when it lands on his desk. We should consider that possibility and ask The President to do that. When Trump enters The White House, his hands should be securely tied. Seeing Trump (Orange Julius Caesar) that frustrated will be quite satisfying.

If this reaches Biden, I guarantee that he's signing it. It's right up his alley.

It's absolutely an authoritarian bill that will create havoc for any org that slightly disagrees with the autocrat in charge.

Expand full comment

Of course. Trump could destroy anybody he didn’t like. That is too much power for anyone!

Expand full comment

Definitely! The Fapweasel is a chronic complainer. He thinks everything should go his way. That’s probably one of the many reasons he wanted to be president, to change the laws so the government would operate in his favor.
